Part 2 of Book Review
I believe that as you read Tony Hsieh's "Delivering Happiness" book (@dhbook), you will see, as I have, that his unique perspective on life permeates everything he does. This includes the unique way he has chosen to wrote this book; and what he has purposefully selected to include in it.
If you are an "old school" business person, you might say that Tony's being too open for a sitting CEO of a large corporation. You also might expect for his book to be a self-serving diatribe from someone who is a bit too overconfident after a big business win. However, I think you would be wrong about both.
I totally get what Tony has done and very much appreciate his dedication to sharing openly and helping other entrepreneurs. I won't go into a lot of detail and spoil it for you. So, be sure to get your own copy so you can read and see for yourself.
I can say that this "business" book reads like part-blog plus part-novel. I have found it easy to read and captivating. I have finished more than half of it within only a day or so, and hope to finish the rest after I make dinner for my family in a few moments.
From my own business writing perspective, it is very well organized and strategically written. There are inherent flaws because he didn't use a ghost writer (which he warns us about in the foreword). In my opinion, I like the authenticity that these minor flaws bring to this written work. It makes it seem like more of a blog in paper form -- and because I am a blogger, I definitely appreciate that.
Tony creates a great flow, using linked references, that unfolds and makes sense as you continue reading. At one point, he shared a bizarre side note about his most beloved caffeinated beverage and rave parties. I didn't get it, at first, because I don't drink it (nor go to raves). However, I kept reading and now can appreciate the reference. He seems to enjoy setting you up so that he can explain a deeper story. I feel that this strength in his writing - using references and building the story - has allowed him to authentically share his story in an open and honest fashion without sounding full of himself.
Have you started reading Delivering Happiness, yet? Do you like it? Do you agree with my perspective or not and why not? Send me a tweet or leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Donna
